A VOYAGE
TO ARCTURUS
David Lindsay
When David Lindsay died in 1945 at the age of sixty-seven he had retired both from writing and, practically, from the daily rounds of living. Fortunately, this retirement from writing came after an intense period of creativity during which he wrote A Voyage to Arcturus, considered by many to be a major classic of science-fiction writing.
This is a work told on many planes. It begins realistically enough when a wealthy English bachelor invites a group of well-to- do friends to participate in a seance conducted by the celebrated medium, Blackhouse. They witness the materialization of a hand- some young man and, moments later, the intrusion into the salon of a wild-looking man named Krag. Krag breaks the apparition's neck with his bare hands and the guests are horrified to see the apparition's mysterious smile transformed into "a vulgar, sordid, bestial grin, which casts a shadow of moral nastiness into every heart."
That is only the beginning. A Voyage to Arcturus will have different meanings for different readers. It is a metaphysical thriller subject to the reader's interpretation. And it is a trip to a world of evil where David Lindsay's vision leaves an indelible imprint.

Condition: Good. Minor wear.
